After a trip to Kandy Botanical Gardens, I got a bit over excited and took lots of pictures of orchids. Determined not to waste these, they get a dedicated post – but for those of you who find this boring, a better one will appear on Thursday.
The Botanical Gardens were the best preserved colonial legacy I have seen, tended with real love and care. They were absolutely packed with Sir Lankan families and friends, picnicking under trees and wandering the many paths. There were also huge numbers of couples, perched in the shade of the trees, holding hands and sharing the occasional chaste kiss. This is almost the only place they can meet, as there are very few social situations for the two sexes to interact, and certainly no places for boyfriends and girlfriends to meet. The one picture of a tree in the slideshow below is notable for being the only tree without a teenage couple underneath!

Great pix, Bella. A pick me up after the last week in the UK.

Thanks Jonathan! How is everything going over there? Looks pretty chaotic from over here…

Hi Bella, in typical Brit fashion some of the left are now making a fuss about inconsistent sentencing. Four years for inciting violence on Facebook seems unduly lenient to me. Anyway, we got bored with the riots and have gone back to phone hacking for a bit of light relief. Hard to believe that you have been in SL for 10 weeks. Liked your last post – keep us all up to date about the next stage of your journey.

The two yellow ones (orchids) look like two rather perplexed and aghast parents! Us?

Hmm…perhaps they’re Rorschach orchids?
